On the occasion of the inscription of Rachid Karami International Fair of Tripoli on the Unesco’s World Heritage list, the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at LAU hosted us for a symposium to celebrate the work of Oscar Niemeyer and uncover our Guest House Renovation.

Re-imaging Palestinian Modern Architectural Heritage is a seminar that is co-offered by Aziza Chaouni and Jens Hanssen at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. We are honored to participate in the seminar’s weekly presentations and showcase our Niemeyer Guest House Renovation as an exemplary case study of 20th century rehabilitation of architectural heritage in the Middle East, focusing on the cultural-historical and socio-political context of their genesis, evolution and the strategies employed to study and safeguard them.

Tripoli, a city in Lebanon, is home to the Rachid Karami International Fair, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1962, which unfortunately remained incomplete and was abandoned due to the Lebanese Civil War in 1975. While reinventing an identity for the city and the architecture of Niemeyer, one of the 15 pavilions of the fair, the Guest House underwent a transformation in 2018.
