Essay - Beyond Ruins: Reimagining Modernism
Writing for "Beyond Ruins, Reimagining Modernism" on preserving meaning, reclaiming context, and building upon the existing.

‘Since the founding of our studio, we have thoroughly engaged in preservation. Because of the richness and diversity inherent to the territories we are exposed to, we have found ourselves more often than not in a position where we have to consider the existing, to think of material conservation procedures, and imagine a set of honest systems and possibilities to go beyond the existing. This involves, amongst other things, immersing ourselves in cultural practices, studying methodologies, and becoming acquainted with conservation charters through our own initiative.
Whether we are given a site in a natural setting or at a complex urban intersection, our approach builds on the idea that preserving the meaning of the extant needs to prevail. Preservation talks to memory; it reclaims context and builds upon it. We believe in preservation as a driver of design thinking because we’re concerned with reactions and interpretation of places and environments.

With projects that include existing structures, we are often invited to change the functions of these structures. Such projects share the particularity of being resolutely optimistic. Not only do they challenge us to acknowledge and preserve the past; they also force us to accept existing architectural expressions as hosts for new programmatic and tectonic use that often pays no respect to its original intent.’
