Located on the Persian Gulf, Kuwait’s arid climate is typical of the region: extreme temperatures have formed vernacular styles that manage heat and airflow. Born of necessity, these techniques are now recognized for their sustainability merits.

Designed as a sculpted monolith projected towards the sea and the horizon KFAS is a solid base on which life can thrive. Inspiration came from the site’s name, which in Arabic references the earth beneath our feet, rocks, sand and ground.

Appearing to float above ground, the building is centered by an elevated, linear podium that creates an open-air courtyard. A taller podium at the northern tip presents a tower that houses administrative facilities and conceals two smaller wind towers that terminate in the ponds from which the building’s cores emerge. Indirect light is optimized on the northern side, as are views out to the sea, while the southern façade is opaque to prevent overheating.

Strategically located along the axis of prevailing winds, the building is anchored to the site via two lateral wings that house conference rooms and offices, a library and a sea-view restaurant. The striated façade renders the building as abstract, diffusing necessary light while protecting the interiors from the harsher rays of the sun.

At ground level, the visitor is elevated towards the courtyard. Below, an outdoor theater cascades down to sea level, protected by hanging volumes, curved and sculpted, as if from the passing of wind and time.
