“Presented in the context of the Islamic arts biennial, this pavilion designed as a place for prayer and built with clear inspiration from the handicrafts and weaving traditions of the gulf countries, is constructed entirely from date palm waste, thus having a negative carbon footprint”

“EAST Architecture Studio wanted to explore the opportunity to transform trunks, branches and leaves of felled date palms into natural and sustainable recycled material with which to create both the supporting structure and the textile coverings of Musalla. In this way, they wanted to propose an example and prototype of "zero carbon" architecture, made with fast-growing "bio-based" materials: a real opportunity for a sustainable future for local regional buildings.”

“The pillars, designed to be structure, function and decoration at the same time, have a staggered, offset shape, deliberately reminiscent of the stepped vertical design that is predominant in the architectural history and culture of these regions. They become narrower as they ascend towards the sky, recalling, as already mentioned, a loom for textiles, evoking firstly the cladding of the building and secondly, the manual craftsmanship traditions that the building aims to celebrate.” - Excerpts from Arkepio “Lightness” publication
